After taking on a project where they saw themselves living for a while, Carly and her family decided to add a large extension to the ground floor of their 1930s semi-detached house. They wanted to add more family and social space by building a large open plan kitchen/dining/living area full of natural light. Their modern industrial style suits their choice of a large Roof Maker Modular Rooflight spanning the full width of the extension adding plenty of light and it makes a statement.

Planning

Carly and her husband had done a couple of smaller renovations to previous houses and as he was in the trade, they made the decision to do a full renovation and extension to their new home. They erected a large ground floor extension with a flat roof to the rear of the property and originally debated between a flat or lantern rooflight.

Having had a pitched roof extension with old traditional pitched rooflights in their previous home, they know they wanted something a lot more modern and brought a lot more light into the home. Wanting to maximise the light and make a statement, Carly decided on a full-width rooflight which needed to be five metres in width giving her the choice of either our Modular Flat Rooflight or Slimline Lantern. Carly wanted to have something different to what she’s used to so decided on a modular rooflight that still had slim glazing bars to match the industrial theme without compromising on light.

The result

The extension is a spectacular addition to the home that seamlessly fits in with the existing building and adds so much space for socialising and family life. It doesn’t look out of place with the industrial feel of the renovation and adds so much light, they have been able to go with bold darker colours and palettes to add warmth and depth.

Carly’s been surprised by how thermally efficient the rooflight is with sub-zero temperatures outside, she says she can’t feel any heat loss or cold spots in the large extension. With such a large rooflight bringing in plenty of light, it means they can make full use of all the space throughout the day.

In the summer, they can open their bi-fold doors and the natural light floods all of the space making it really feel like they can bring the inside out and vice versa.

“We didn’t want to compromise and the rooflights being one of those things. It’s just, it was never a compromise we wanted to make and we’re glad we didn’t at the end of it.”

“We spend all of our time in here. You know, I think it’s a great space that gets so much light so we spend a lot of time in here and it’s got so much more of a social space.”

Carly definitely feels like they’ve achieved exactly what they’ve set out to achieve and won’t be moving any time soon.
