Frequently Asked Questions
► What is the difference between a skylight and a rooflight?
There is no technical difference between a rooflight and a skylight, It is more a case of what name is used commonly. In the UK, rooflight is the more common term.
► Do you need planning permission to install a rooflight window?
As a general rule, you don’t need planning permission as long as you follow these conditions;
Rooflights can not protrude more than 150 millimetres above the existing roof plane. No changes can be higher than the highest part of the roof or stand out above the roof ridge.
You can read more in our full article on skylight planning permission. If you’re unsure please always check with your local planning authority.
► How long do rooflights last?
Maintaining your rooflights might seem like an unnecessary chore, especially when Roof Maker rooflights have a life expectancy of 30 years, but to give them the best possible chance of lasting that long whilst looking their best, you’ll need to do a bit of easy maintenance.
► How do I clean my skylight?
All our rooflights come with one of four distinct Reflex® glass options, which may be selected individually or combined for even better performance. All of our glass units have a low-maintenance, easy clean coating as standard, and filter up to 99% of harmful rays to prevent bleaching of your fabrics and furnishings.
However, if you find you want to give them a quick clean, then start by dusting off any loose dirt or cobwebs. Following this, use a squeegee and a glass cleaning product, dishwashing liquid, or vinegar solution to wipe the glass.
► How often do rooflights need maintenance?
Regular maintenance is key to your rooflight’s longevity. We recommend cleaning windows once or twice a year and scheduling annual inspections to ensure your investment lasts for decades to come.
► How much do skylights/rooflights cost?
The cost of your skylight will depend on the skylight you choose and any additional services you might need.
As a guide, these will include:
- Style of skylight e.g. flat, lantern, fixed, opening
- Size of skylight
- Type of glazing, double or triple
- Additional tints, coatings, lamination
- Delivery or collection
- Professional services e.g. architects, planners, builders.
It’s always best to get any quotes upfront to make sure you know exactly how much you’ll be paying.
► How long do rooflights take to install?
This will vary with rooflights typically taking between a few hours to a couple of days to install, depending on the size and complexity of the project. Outside factors like weather, structural concerns, and access, as well as the project’s complexity itself, will all affect the timeline.
► How big should my rooflight be?
As a rule of thumb, your rooflight should maximise the space available for natural light without taking over the room. If you choose an unsuitable rooflight, you may find temperature control more difficult leading to more expensive bills. Along with heating, you should consider which rooms will be exposed to sunlight and if they are designed to withstand UV rays.
