What’s the Difference?
Bifold doors and sliding doors both feature large panes of glass which let in light and allow you to bring the outside in. However, their construction, mechanisms, and styling make a world of difference. But what is the difference between a bifold door and a sliding door?
What are bifold doors?
Bifold doors are made of multiple panels of framed glass connected by hinges, folding concertina-style to one side when opened. These doors are unique in that they open completely, allowing the space to be completely open to the outdoors.
Bifold doors can also feature a ‘traffic door’ or access leaf. This is a single panel of glass that opens and shuts like a regular door so you can access the outside without opening up the entire space.
What are sliding doors?
Sliding doors, on the other hand, are much simpler in design and consist of large glass panes that slide along parallel tracks without protruding into your space. These doors have to sit in a frame and when opened usually take up a portion of the entrance which limits how open you can make the space.
Both options will be limited or dictated by the type of frames used, the technology of the glazing, and the size of the opening you’d like to fill.

Which type of door is better?
Both doors provide a level of style and performance that can only improve your home. Matt DiBara (Co-founder of The Contractor Consultants), speaking to the Housing Digest highlights these benefits noting;
“On average, though, upgrading to an energy-efficient door could save you anywhere from 10% to 20% on your energy bills over time. It might not feel like a huge change month-to-month, but it definitely adds up over the years, especially in extreme climates where heating and cooling costs are higher. Plus, you’ll likely notice a more comfortable temperature in your home, which is a nice bonus!”

This added value means that both are great candidates to transform your home into a light, inviting space for living and entertaining. However, to help you choose, we’re going to investigate a few of the key decisions you’ll have to make.
Space & Opening Mechanism
Bifold Doors: Allow for a fully openable space, seamlessly connecting your indoor and outdoor areas. However, they require stacking space for the panels when opened.
Sliding Doors: Offer a larger glass-to-frame ratio with uninterrupted views but typically only open up a lesser percentage of the doorway width.
Flexibility & Functionality
Bifold Doors: Can include a ‘traffic door,’ which functions like a standard door for easy access without opening the full set.
Sliding Doors: Provide better control over how much you open them, from a slight breeze to a fully open section.
Aesthetic Appeal
Bifold Doors: Create a striking indoor-outdoor effect and highlight views with sleek aluminium frames.
Sliding Doors: Prioritise expansive views and natural light due to fewer frames and larger panes of glass.
Thresholds & Accessibility
Bifold Doors: These can be installed with a flush threshold, making them ideal for wheelchair users and reducing trip hazards.
Sliding Doors: Typically have a small step thanks to the dual track but can be customised with a low threshold option.

Costs and Efficiency
Both types of doors require investment for installation. This is down to the fact that you need to work with trusted suppliers and installers to ensure your doors fit flush, retain warmth, and prevent rain or draughts from seeping in. This is where choosing a door based on the performance of the product is key. And, where our team at Roof Maker can help.
